Whale Watch is the eighth episode of Series 9; it was written by Laura Beaumont & Paul Larson.

Plot[]

The story begins with Bronwyn's desire to record the calming sounds of whale songs. Charlie suggests taking her out on his skiff for the expedition, and Ben, with his vast knowledge of marine life, decides to join them. Once they are out at sea, the trip takes a competitive turn. Charlie and Ben start to vie for Bronwyn's attention, each trying to outdo the other with their seafaring expertise and knowledge. This distraction proves problematic. When Bronwyn eventually sights a whale, the men's ongoing dispute causes them to lose control of the boat. The vessel capsizes, plunging all three of them into the water.

Back on land, it becomes apparent that the group is overdue. The fire rescue team is alerted to the situation. Fireman Sam quickly takes command, racing to the scene in the fire rescue boat, the Juno. Simultaneously, Elvis and Penny utilize the new, advanced sonar equipment aboard the Neptune to pinpoint the exact location of the missing trio. The fire crew successfully locates and rescues the stranded Bronwyn, Charlie, and Ben from the water. They are brought safely back to shore. The ordeal highlights the dangers of competitive behavior at sea but also provides Charlie with an opportunity to demonstrate genuine bravery.
