The Wishing Well is the fifth episode of the second series.
Plot[]
It's a hot day in July and Tennis Fever has taken over in Dylis Price's General Store although when Norman sees what his mum is watching he remarks that it's boring. Something that Dylis disagrees with.
Sarah and James enter and ask Norman if he wants to come with them to the park to play football but Dylis orders them to go and pick strawberries instead. On the way out of the shop they pass Bella and Norman moans about having to pick strawberries although this gives Bella an idea to make a Strawberry Gateau and she goes into the shop to purchase some sugar from Dylis, inviting her to come over to the cafe where she'll show her how to make a Strawbery Gateau.
Meanwhile, Station Officer Steele is preparing for a presentation to mark his 25th year in the fire service and is discussing with a reporter from Newtown Gazzette the possibility of having his picture taken (although he has to correct the reporter that he is marking 25 years in the service and not 5.
At the Strawberry Field, Sarah and James have been busy picking strawberries whilst Norman sits eating them, brushing off a warning that he'll be sick.
Sam and Elvis recieve a parcel which contains Station Officer Steele's Long Service Medal for his upcoming presentation which is to be given to him has been accidentally sent to the fire station instead of Newtown where the presentation is to take place. Sam and Elvis have to go over to the Newtown HQ to pick up some new hoses, so they decide to deliver the medal whilst they are there and Elvis keeps it hidden in his pocket before Station Officer Steele can see it.
When it is time for the children to return to Pontypandy with Dilys' strawberries, Norman doesn't want to go back on the bus with Sarah and James but he denies that it is because he is feeling sick. Instead he states that he wants to practice heading with James' ball. Sarah points out he'll have to walk although secretly Norman is pleased.
Sam and Elvis spot the twins and stop by to say hello. Sam comments on the fact that the twins have found The Old Well and goes on to tell them that it used to be a Wishing Well. Sarah asks if Sam wished to be a fireman and he tells her that he did and then introduces Sarah and James to the idea of throwing in a coin and making a wish. Elvis also decides to have a go too, but gets it wrong by wishing out loud to be a rockstar. Little does Elvis know that he has just thrown Station Officer Steele's medal down the well instead of a coin. At that moment the bus arrives to take Sarah and James home so Sam and Elvis also go on their way.
Norman, who by now is feeling very sick from eating so many strawberries, accidentally throws James' ball into the bucket of the old well and realises he will have to get it back as its not his ball. He tries to retrieve the ball, but he leans too far into the well and ends up falling down to the bottom, becoming stranded.
Meanwhile Elvis discovers that Station Officer Steele's medal is no longer in his pocket and upon returning to the fire station, Station Officer Steele overhears Elvis and Sam talking about the loss of the medal.
Meanwhile at the cafe, Bella has made a strawberry gateau with the strawberries that Sarah and James picked. Then Dilys enters the cafe, frantically worrying about Norman, who has been out long enough for him to miss his favourite programme on the television. Trevor decides they should drive back over to the strawberry fields to look for him. When they get there, they call out for him and they hear his answering cry for help coming from down the well. Dylis initially mistakes Norman's calls for help as an Angel's Voice and comments that he's in Heaven but Sarah and James realise that he's down the well.
The fire service soon come to the rescue. They lower a ladder into well and and Sam goes down to the bottom. After checking that Norman is alright he tells Norman to hold on tight to him and carries him out of the well. Norman thanks Fireman Sam and throws James his football. Station Officer Steele tells Norman to take more care in future but then says he wishes he had his medal. Norman then reveals he made a profit from all the money that was thrown down the well over the years. He shows it to the others but Sam then realises that one of the coins is actually Station Officer Steele's medal, who is very grateful and congratulates Norman for finding the medal.
Back home, Norman is resting his injured foot, when Dilys comes into his bedroom with a special treat for him. Unfortunately it turns out to be a slice of strawberry flan and Norman suddenly feels even more sick than he has been all day.

- Bella's strawberry gateau would later appear in the Joshua Jones episode "Haywire" as a buffet food.
- The BBC programmes website refers to this episode as Wishing Well.[2]
- Sarah and James later encountered a wishing well again in the sixth series episode, Cat Magic. However, in this episode, Sarah claims that you are not supposed to wish out loud to Elvis, but in Cat Magic, Bronwyn, Sarah and James all wish out loud.
- Norman falls into a wishing well again in the seventh series episode, Pontypandy Extreme.
Goofs[]
- It does not seem as though Bella pays for the 2lbs of sugar Dilys gave her before walking out of the shop.
- We do not see anyone send out the call to rescue Norman.
- Continuity error: The date this episode was released in Welsh was after Thief in Pontypandy. In that episode, Station Officer Steele lost his long service medal, even though he is not presented with it until this episode (not seen).
