Mother's Helper is the ninth episode of Series 6. It was written by Andrew Brenner.

Plot[]

Helen goes away on a course, leaving Mike to do all of the housework. When he leaves the iron on while he goes out to fix Dilys' washing machine, a fire starts. The plot focuses on Mike Flood's unfortunate attempt to handle all the housework after his wife, Helen, leaves for a nursing course. Left in charge, Mike's overconfidence and eagerness to take shortcuts ultimately lead to a domestic disaster. His struggles with multitasking set the stage for the emergency that requires the help of the Pontypandy Fire Service.

The trouble begins with Norman Price, who is tasked with doing the laundry at the Price household. When he overstuffs the washing machine and leaves it running, the machine breaks down. Mike Flood is then called away from his own chores—specifically, his ironing—to go and fix the overloaded machine. In his rush, a distracted Mike leaves his hot iron unattended at his house. The abandoned iron soon causes a fire, putting his own home and family in danger. Fireman Sam and his crew must then rush to the scene, demonstrating the importance of fire safety and highlighting the perils of not paying attention to household tasks. In the end, the episode teaches a valuable lesson about the dangers of carelessness and the need for everyone to do their part safely.

Goofs[]

  • Mike Flood should know that Mandy Flood is too young to do the ironing.
  • Because stock footage is used, Elvis is not seen in the corner when Sam and Penny go to the pole. But in the next scene, Elvis is in the corner with his mop and bucket.
    • In the same scenes, the gas handle is up in the stock footage, but down in the new footage.
  • In the scene where Elvis Cridlington falls down the pole drop, Jupiter's rear logo is crooked.
  • Jupiter and Venus arrive at the Flood's house from the right side which is impossible as the road comes from Newtown on that side.
