The Big Freeze is the second episode (thirteenth and final episode in Welsh) of Series 5.

Norman raises everyone's temperature with the bed he builds for his pet lamb Woolly, but he leaves the electric blanket unattended and causes a fire.

This is the first (and only) Fireman Sam episode to feature a voice-over in the end credits, as Norman can be heard in the end credits counting sheep, but only on the DVD releases, and also used in the Welsh and Polish prints of the episode. This line was cut on the TV channel broadcasts, and was also cut on the French, Italian, German, Latin Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Romanian, Hungarian, Czech and Slovak prints of the episode.
On DVD releases of this episode, stock footage from A Real Live Wire of Elvis turning off the power can be seen before Sam even enters Norman's room.
In the title card, Woolly is wearing Elvis' earmuffs and scarf.
James' rollerblades from Trevor's Boot Sale can be seen under a storage shelf in Norman's room.
If you pay attention to the wall in Norman's Bedroom, you can see a pennant which is spelled Arizons (Note: The R is reversed.) In a reference to the University of Arizona Wildcats Football (Soccer) team.
This episode along with Norman's Tricky Day, Chemistry Set, The Wishing Well, Dilys' Forgetful Day and What Goes Up were the only episodes to be not added on BBC iPlayer in November 2020. However, a clip from the episode did appear on the promo when the show along with Brum and Bob the Builder were added onto BBC iPlayer.

When Norman comes with Woolly into his bedroom to see that the electric blanket on fire, Norman has his winter gloves on; but when he comes back downstairs, they disappear, when they're back outside they are back on again.
As this episode was produced after Pizza Palaver, Bella already has her pizza oven.
During television broadcasts of this episode on television, when Sam puts the fire out on the electric blanket, he forgets to turn the power off. This was fixed on DVD releases as Elvis is seen turning of the power by the use of stock footage from A Real Live Wire.
